چکیده

The effects of sublethal concentrations of phenol and cadmium on the phototactic responses of the stage II nauplii of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite were investigated. Increased toxicant concentrations caused a reduction in phototactic responses. Balanus amphitrite nauplii exposed to nominal phenol concentrations of 100 ppm and higher for 1–12 h failed to exhibit phototactic responses, while longer exposure times of 24 and 48 h reduced the lowest observable effect concentration (LOECs) to 80 and 60 ppm, respectively. For cadmium, the LOECs, based on nominal concentrations, for B. amphitrite following 1, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h exposures were 20, 4.5, 4.0, 1, and 0.75 ppm, respectively. The LOECs can be significantly reduced by increasing the duration of exposure to the toxicants. A good relationship exists between the phototactic response and toxicant concentration as well as exposure time. Results of this study indicate that the toxicant-induced reduction in phototactic responses of barnacle larvae can be used in a sensitive, rapid screening test for ecotoxicological assessments.  1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. UV-B damages eyes of barnacle larvae and impairs their photoresponses and settlement success.

The impact of enhanced UV-B radiation on marine ecosystems due to ozone depletion has caused growing global concern. Barnacle larvae have evolved complex photoreceptors and elaborate phototactic behaviors, which enable them to identify suitable habitats for feeding and settlement. For the first time, we demonstrate that environmentally realistic levels of UV-B radiation can induce ocular damage...

Toxicity effect of three kinds of colliodal silver nanoparticles on barnacle larvae Amphibalanus Amphitrite

In this study, the toxicity of colloidal silver nanoparticles produced from three companies (US NANO, Pioneers, Nanonasb Pars) in the larvae of barnacles Amphibalanus amphitrite was evaluated using standard OECD. These crustaceans are important economically and ecologically. In this research, the LC50 within 24 hours for nauplius stages II, III, IV, V and VI examined against toxicity of the thr...

Larval metamorphosis of the barnacle Amphibalanus amphitrite under mono and mixed algal diet

Barnacles are one of the dominant macrofouling organisms found in the intertidal region throughout the word. In this study, the effects of mono and mixed algal diet (Chaetoceros calcitrans, C. muelleri, Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis suecica and Chlorella vulgaris) on the larval metamorphosis of the barnacle Amphibalanus amphitrite were evaluated. Larvae obtained from A. amphitrite were cultur...

Distinct Retinal Pathways Drive Spatial Orientation Behaviors in Zebrafish Navigation

Navigation requires animals to adjust ongoing movements in response to pertinent features of the environment and select between competing target cues. The neurobiological basis of navigational behavior in vertebrates is hard to analyze, partly because underlying neural circuits are experience dependent. Phototaxis in zebrafish is a hardwired navigational behavior, performed at a stage when larv...

Characterization and genetic analysis of Drosophila melanogaster photobehavior during larval development.

In Drosophila melanogaster, during the mid third instar of development larvae cease foraging and commence a period of increased locomotor activity referred to as wandering behavior. In this study, we quantified the wild type larval response to light during the foraging (first, second, and early third instars) and wandering (late third instar) stages of development. Foraging larvae in the first,...
